The evolution of industrial automation calls for increasingly high-performance motion systems capable of combining precision, reliability and the ability to handle heavy loads. It is within this context that Servomech S.p.A. has developed the new HPA Series – High Performance Actuators, a family of linear actuators designed to extend the application range of electromechanical solutions to demanding operating conditions. Manufactured in-house at the company’s facility, the new series combines high-level Made in Italy quality with more than 35 years of experience and innovation.

The new range is currently available in five sizes, with load capacities from 100 to 500 kN. It is based on the use of planetary roller screws, a technology representing the latest step in the company’s development path, following solutions based first on trapezoidal screws and subsequently on ball screws. The core of the HPA Series is its planetary roller screws, available with diameters ranging from 30 to 75 mm. This technology provides high structural stiffness, excellent positioning accuracy and long service life, even under intensive duty cycles. Compared with conventional ball screws, planetary roller screw technology can achieve load capacities up to three times higher within the same envelope, while maintaining high speeds and acceleration rates. Standard strokes are available up to 1,000 mm, while the backlash-free mechanical transmission contributes to extremely accurate control of position, speed and applied force. These features make the HPA Series particularly suitable for applications requiring high dynamic performance without compromising motion accuracy.
Modular design for flexible machine integration
A key distinguishing feature of the new actuator family is its modular design, developed to meet different machine integration requirements. Available configurations include a precision planetary gearbox combined with a zero-backlash coupling for in-line motor mounting, as well as a high-strength toothed-belt drive for parallel motor mounting. A version with a male input shaft is also available, providing maximum design flexibility. Integration with servo motors from leading manufacturers is facilitated by the actuators’ compatibility with widely adopted market interfaces, while ISO 8132-compliant mounting dimensions promote interchangeability with existing hydraulic cylinders, simplifying retrofit operations. One of the most interesting application areas is the replacement of hydraulic cylinders, including high-power units. The adoption of an electromechanical system enables more precise control of both motion and force, while reducing maintenance requirements and improving overall system energy efficiency.
Integration with electronic control systems also makes it possible to implement fully synchronized solutions capable of accurately managing position, speed and load, meeting the requirements of an industry increasingly oriented towards digital architectures and plug-and-play systems.
The performance of the HPA Series extends its potential use across a wide range of industrial sectors. Key applications include heavy industry, plastics processing, steel production, metal forming and machining equipment and, more generally, industrial automation applications requiring high forces, precision and continuous operation. The high efficiency of the transmission, combined with the possibility of customizing the actuator configuration, also makes the HPA Series suitable for emerging applications where reduced energy consumption, lower maintenance costs and long-term reliability are key requirements.
